What is curtailment?

As renewable energy adoption grows, so does the challenge of excess energy production. In markets like the Netherlands, this often leads to negative energy prices, where producers have to pay to feed excess power into the grid.

Negative prices can directly impact the profitability of solar installation. The estimated cost of this phenomenon for an average solar farm is between €10,000 – €36,000 each year. To prevent this cost, curtailment is used as a solution.

Curtailment means temporarily reducing or shutting down your solar production when the energy market is unfavorable — like during periods of negative (day-ahead or imbalance) prices.
