The challenge: a vulnerable energy future

Across Europe, the transition to renewables is making us less dependent on fossil fuels. That’s a good thing for security – we don’t need to import as much every day. However, true independence requires a deeper look. Some parts of our economy will still use fossil fuels for years. And the new energy system we’re building still relies on imported equipment, like inverters, batteries, and wind turbines. We have to be smart; we can’t just swap one dependence for another. If we want to shape our energy system on our own terms, we need to be able to control it on our own terms.

Adding a digital layer is a necessity. Our traditional response of laying more copper in the ground is no longer sufficient. Grid congestion, once a technical concept, is now a growing reality for towns and cities across Europe. We need to digitalize the grid to make the most of existing infrastructure, give consumers and businesses access to capacity, and give operators clear, real-time insight into what’s possible.

But as we add a digital layer to our physical grid, we need to make sure it is governed by European principles. Technical sovereignty in the critical parts of our energy infrastructure is non-negotiable. These challenges are not setbacks. They are signals. They show us where the pressure is, and where we need to act. If we get this right, we won’t just build a renewable energy system. We’ll build one that is stronger, fairer and truly ours.

Why a trusted digital backbone is needed

How can Europe scale up renewables, maintain stability, and keep the system secure for everyone?
