TL;DR

The Teleport Gateway avoids automated trading to remain a neutral partner, leaving market strategy to the experts. We focus on what we do best: secure local execution, grid compliance, and protecting your connection limits.

A common question we get is, “If the Teleport is a Energy Management System (EMS), why doesn’t it automatically curtail based on day-ahead quarterly prices?”.

It’s a fair question, and our answer is at the heart of our strategy: we deliberately don’t.

It might sound like a missed opportunity, but this decision is fundamental to our mission. It allows us to focus on our core strengths and be a reliable, independent partner within the energy ecosystem.

Here’s why.

The complexity of trading

If we started adding day-ahead steering, we would inevitably be pulled into imbalance management, then into forecasting. This would move us from being a technology provider to becoming a trader, competing with the very customers we aim to serve.

Furthermore, chasing purely day-ahead prices is often the wrong strategy. A Balancing Responsible Party (BRP) is financially responsible for keeping their entire portfolio in balance. Steering a single battery based on day-ahead prices, without considering the rest of the portfolio, can actually create an imbalance and lead to costly penalties from the grid operator.

True optimization requires a holistic portfolio view. And that is the specialized, complex, and essential work that our partners do.

So, what does the Teleport actually do?

Glad you asked!

Instead of trading, we focus on providing the hardware that executes the trader’s commands instantly and securely. In other words, the Teleport focuses on reliable control.

Paul Mignot - Withthegrid

“We’re often asked why we don’t just do the trading ourselves. The answer is focus. Our partners are experts at market strategy. We are experts at secure, local execution. We aim to provide the best how for their strategic what.”
Paul Mignot – CEO, Withthegrid

Thus, the Teleport is the bridge between different steering parties and your physical assets. This means that our team is working to deliver:

  • Grid compliance anywhere in Europe: Meeting regulatory demands like the RfG application in different countries.Including in the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Greece, Denmark, and more.
  • Local optimization: Running local, behind-the-meter strategiesDiscover all our control strategies here: Teleport local EMS control strategies, explained. like peak shaving, self-consumption boost, and hybrid plant/cable pooling optimization.
  • Multi-party signals management: Receiving, prioritizing and processing setpoints from different parties (market parties, DSOs, specific contracts) simultaneously.
  • Grid connection protection: Ensuring the assets always operate safely within its physical and contractual connection limits.
  • Cybersecurity: Protecting your assetsRead more about all of our security measures on our Security page. with ISO 27001-certified processes and RED3.3 compliant design, secure outbound-only connections, fully encrypted communication, and 24/7 monitoring.

This clear separation of roles is essential for a stable and scalable energy system, and ensures the Teleport is a long-term solution, not a short-term tactic. It’s built to handle both the present and future technical and regulatory challenges, making your assets a flexible and secure part of the grid.

I want both the Teleport and asset trading. What should I do?

Great! The Teleport is designed for integration, so you have the freedom to select the best solution for your strategy. Here’s what to do:

  1. Get your Teleport and join our comprehensive energy ecosystem.
  2. Select the best partner for your trading strategy.
  3. We take care of the connection. We have a strong ecosystem of trading partners who work with the Teleport out-of-the-box. If you choose one of them, we simply configure the connection. If you choose a new partner, our team will handle the integration with them.

This approach ensures you get the most value out of the Teleport ecosystem and your assets, and can adapt over time as your business needs develop.

I currently have a gateway that includes EPEX steering, why should I switch?

Starting with an all-in-one solution is a logical choice. It offers simplicity and gets your project up and running quickly. However, as your energy portfolio matures, combining your hardware and your trading strategy into one box can limit your options.

So here is why specialized hardware wins in the long run:

  • Best of both worlds: You combine deep expertise in two distinct areas. You get a hardware partner dedicated to connectivity and local control, and a trading partner focused on market prices. This ensures you do not have to compromise on the quality of either your hardware or your trading strategy.
  • Freedom of choice: You can switch BRPs or trading partners as your strategy evolves without needing to replace your gateway.
  • Extended market access: Some schedulers are great for day-ahead prices, but they often cannot work for flexibility markets like FCR or aFRR. The Teleport handles these complex requirements with ease.

In short, you switch to gain control. You get robust local control from us, and the total freedom to pursue market opportunities with the trading partner of your choice.
