Edmij

Edmij helps large energy consumers and producers pay less and earn more from their energy, through dynamic power pricing and smart control of solar, wind and batteries. Independent and active on the energy markets since 2013.

Edmij is an independent Dutch energy company that helps large business consumers and energy producers get more out of their energy. We supply electricity at dynamic prices, forecast consumption and generation, trade directly on the energy markets, and automatically steer 800 MW of flexible assets (solar panels, batteries, wind turbines, CHP and more) so our customers pay less and earn more per kWh.

As one of the most active congestion service providers (CSP) in the Netherlands, we also help companies grow despite grid congestion by unlocking value from their flexibility.

Wind Netherlands

Wind farm unlocks aFRR revenue via partnership with Edmij and Withthegrid

The situation

The operator of a 5 MW wind farm was selling its production on the day-ahead, intraday and imbalance markets. Balancing capacity was the one revenue stream left on the table.

Qualifying for aFRR was the blocker. TenneT requires a four-second control loop: measurements out of the asset and setpoints back in, every four seconds, without interruption.

What was built

Edmij connected the wind farm through the Teleport, which handles the four-second data exchange in both directions. That link runs into Edmij’s own trading and control system, so the asset meets the grid operator requirements.

The result

The wind farm now earns from aFRR, resulting in 20-30% increase in yearly earnings.

Solar and battery Netherlands

Farm earns from congestion management without shutting down its solar

Customer

Confidential

The situation

A Dutch farm runs a 650 kWp solar installation alongside a 1.2 MWh battery. Its grid operator asked the farm to participate in congestion management, receiving payments to reduce export at peak moments.

The problem was the instrument. The grid operator’s requirement is about what leaves the site: export to the grid has to go be lowered. Without control at the connection point, the only way to guarantee that is to shut the inverters down, which leaves money on the table.

What was built

Edmij connected the site through Teleport and steers on the main connection instead of on the inverters. During a congestion event, export is brought to zero while the solar keeps producing. Everything generated goes to on-site consumption first, and the surplus charges the battery.

The result

The grid operator sees zero export and its requirement is met. The farm keeps the value of its own production, and the battery banks what would otherwise have been thrown away.

Edmij holds the CSP role, the market access and the control system in house, so the request from the grid operator reaches the site directly. Edmij is the most active Congestion Service Provider in the Netherlands, with over 90 contracts
