NieuweStroom and Withthegrid partner to monetize solar flexibility and ease grid congestion
NieuweStroom and Withthegrid are partnering to help midsize solar producers earn money by reducing output during grid congestion (CBC) using the Teleport. This makes solar energy flexible, supports grid stability, and creates new revenue streams for producers through a simplified, all-in-one setup.
Utrecht, 10th of April 2025 — Energy supplier NieuweStroomNieuweStroom is a Dutch energy supplier known as the pioneer of dynamic energy contracts, enabling business customers to benefit from real-time pricing. The company also supports entrepreneurs with innovative and sustainable energy solutions. For more information, visit nieuwestroom.nl. and WiththegridWe’re technology company specializing in monitoring of grid infrastructure and control of energy assets. Our flagship product, the Teleport Gateway, is a secure asset controller that connects distributed energy resources – such as solar PV panels, wind turbines, batteries, and EV chargers – to enable remote control. It is used by leading energy companies and utilities in Europe to unlock the benefits of flexibility.

By combining NieuweStroom’s flex contracts with Withthegrid’s Teleport controller, customers with solar panels can unlock the opportunities to be compensated for not feeding power into the grid during periods of congestion, to cut costs when market prices are low or negative, and earn extra revenue by taking part in balancing services (such as imbalance and aFRR).

Offering congestion management services
Dutch grid operators recently introduced “Capacity Limiting Contracts”,In Dutch: Capaciteitsbeperkend Contract (CBC).
A CBC is an agreement between a grid operator and a connected party, where the party voluntarily agrees to temporarily reduce its electricity consumption or generation to prevent grid congestion. In return, the party receives a financial compensation.
Learn more with the complete explainer: What is a Capacity Limiting Contract (CBC)? a voluntary arrangement where a producer agrees to reduce output when the grid is expected to be congested in exchange for financial compensation. This concept, part of a broader push for Alternative Transport Rights, intends to make better use of existing grid infrastructure and connect more renewable projects without waiting for lengthy upgrades.
As a Congestion Service Provider,A Congestion Service Provider (CSP) is an entity that trades flexible electricity capacity with grid operators to prevent congestion and maintain grid stability. CSPs represent connected parties, submit bids for redispatch, and help optimize electricity flow during peak periods.

Meanwhile, Withthegrid provides its Teleport Gateway, which makes the solar installation controllable in real time, thereby unlocking its flexibility capabilities.
With this new setup, the grid operator can activate the limitation one day in advance (day ahead) if congestion is expected in a given area. Set-point commands are then sent to the Teleport at the scheduled hour, reducing output for the necessary duration to ensure that solar production is only (partially) used for self-consumption. Once the congestion period ends, the system automatically ramps back up. In exchange, producers receive a compensation payment.

Key benefits for solar producers
- New revenue opportunities: With flexibility, asset owners have the possibility of getting extra revenue from offering ancillary services, subscribing to a CBC, and getting the best out of market prices.
- Simplified process: For the end customer, this setup is designed to be as seamless as a standard energy contract. NieuweStroom will serve as the single point of contact for participating solar producers.
- Future proof: NieuweStroom customers can easily expand their solar installation with a battery. The Teleport Gateway is integrated with over 50+ battery brands.See all supported brands in the Teleport Asset Library. Need an additional brand? Contact us.
