Withthegrid earns YUSO certification for the Belgian market

TL;DR

With its new YUSO-certification, Withthegrid is helping Belgian businesses obtain an optimal energy site with a reliable EMS.

Belgian businesses installing a battery or other flexible energy asset now face a question the Netherlands answered years ago: which control setup lets you actually use that flexibility, instead of just owning it? We’re glad to say we now have an answer for the Belgian market.

Withthegrid is now YUSO-certified. From today, Belgian SMEs can manage their local flexibility using the Teleport, our on-site controller, in combination with YUSO’s flexibility services. It’s a combination we’ve already proven at scale in the Netherlands, and one YUSO has spent years building towards in Belgium.

Why this combination exists

YUSO has been at the center of Belgian battery flexibility since 2012, when the Waregem-based company began operating three battery energy storage systems connected to the transmission grid, totaling 100 MW and 300 MWh. That utility-scale track record has since extended downward. In 2025, the majority of new BESS installations at Belgian SMEs were commissioned with YUSO’s control system, as the commercial and industrial segment kept growing off the back of the 2022 energy crisis.

Controlling a battery commercially is only half the job. The other half is making sure the asset actually follows the signal it’s given without putting the grid connection at risk. That’s where the Teleport helps: it sits on-site, executes YUSO’s control commands, and enforces grid limits locally.

How we found each other

Withthegrid and YUSO first worked together on a large battery project in the Netherlands. We supplied the energy management system, giving YUSO real-time visibility into the installation’s performance and a reliable way to control it. That project became the basis for a wider partnership, one now formalized for the Belgian market through this certification.

Choosing a high-performing EMS is crucial when integrating any flexibility project,” said Michel Verschuere, CEO of YUSO. “No matter how good your control signal or bidding strategy is, if the battery fails to follow it correctly because of poor EMS integration, your revenue model is directly impacted. We are therefore pleased to add Withthegrid to our list of certified EMS suppliers.”

What we bring from the Dutch grid

We built the Teleport in one of Europe’s most congested power grids. In the Netherlands, we already enable traders to trade flexibility through congestion platforms such as GOPACS while complying with mandatory DSO control (Realtime Interface).

That experience carries over directly to Belgium, which is now building similar local flexibility marketplaces (including NODES and picloFlex) and has its own DSO requirements (Telecontrole).

We intend to bring the same experience that helped Dutch businesses prepare for these.

“We’ve watched grid congestion increase in the Netherlands for years, and Belgium now starts encountering the same challenge: businesses need flexibility to keep expanding,” explains Paul Mignot, CEO at Withthegrid. “We built the Teleport for this type of case. We enforce grid limits, enable peak shaving, and allow Yuso to turn the flexibility into extra revenue. Together, we expect to give Belgian SMEs the same result Dutch businesses already have.”

What it means for Belgian SMEs

With this certification, YUSO and Withthegrid take the next step in a partnership that extends beyond a single project. For SMEs investing in a battery or other flexible energy system, pairing a proven EMS with an experienced commercial partner means lower integration risk and faster access to the energy markets.
