TL;DR

The Teleport Gateway allows you as an asset owner to give secure access to different traders all behind one connection. It guards these individual connections by maintaining strict data separation between traders. This removes the need to install multiple local EMSs on a single site.

Are you an asset owner with multiple assets, such as solar panels and batteries? Then you probably work with different partners. While one energy trader might optimize your solar production, the other can manage your assets.

Previously, managing multiple external parties behind a single grid connection proved to be quite difficult. Asset owners often needed to set up individual gateways or on-site EMSs for each partner or create specific configurations preventing unwanted exposure of data. This method led to higher hardware expenses, difficulty with overall compliance, and difficulties in overseeing grid connection limits.

To navigate the problems of multi-asset management, a multi-trader setup was developed for the Teleport Gateway. In a multi-trader setup, the Teleport guards the communication and grid connection of the entire site, while each (external) party only receives access to steer their assigned asset(s). In this article we’ll explain how a multi-trader setup works and how you can benefit from it.

How does a multi-trader setup work?

Every multi-trader setup looks different. Let’s take a look at a multi-trader setup with a Congestion Service Provider (CSP)A CSP can manage your flexible capacity and offer it to operators to resolve grid congestion. Additionally, they can also assist you in trading your flexible capacity to trade on the energy market. and a Balancing Service Provider (BSP)When the supply and demand of electricity are not in balance, TenneT calls on BSPs to help restore the frequency. To restore this, A BSP uses your flexible capacity and offers it as a balancing service. These services are only activated when necessary..

When you or the grid in your area is struggling with a lot of grid congestion, a CSP is often assigned to resolve this. In order to do so, they need access to your energy-generating assets, such as your solar panels. However, in order to make the most of this energy and avoid high imbalance costs, a BSP is asked to optimize energy trading or balancing services (like FCR, aFRR, or mFRR). They will get access to your batteries. These two parties do not need access to your whole site and only to specific areas. However, introducing multiple parties to a single site creates a practical challenge: How do you allow separate entities to steer different assets without violating your total grid connection limits?

The Teleport Gateway enables this multi-party control through multi-tenancy, managing individual asset commands locally while keeping your main grid connection within safe physical limits.

Here is how you can set up independent CSP and BSP steering behind one connection using a multi-trader gateway approach:

Instead of installing multiple hardware boxes, a single Teleport acts as the independent, on-site controller. It allows your CSP and BSP to connect independently via secure APIs. You get to assign each party dedicated access to specific assets. This way you can make sure that your data stays protected.

Benefits of a multi-trader setup

Using a single gateway for multiple traders benefits your daily operations, by:

  • Simplified setup: One Teleport handles the entire connection. Whilst staying up to date with compliance standards;
  • Isolated incident management: Data and alerts are separated by trader. You determine where your data goes, guaranteeing a secure data flow;
  • Ability to chose and change traders: You maintain full control over your site infrastructure. If you wish to switch between vendors, there is no need to reconfigure the entire system. You can easily assign, change, or revoke control access for your individual partners without having to change the physical hardware.
