Clear and simple asset monitoring for district heating

Honored to be featured in Euroheat & Power magazine! We discussed the increasing digitization of district heating grids and the benefits of remote asset monitoring for district heating. In fact, you can receive the article/case study by clicking here:

asset monitoring for district heating

District heating grids are increasingly getting online. That is why Withthegrid has developed an asset monitoring approach that integrates sensor data with manual measurements, geographic visualization, and workflow management. It helps to shorten the manual inspection time, to increase the asset lifetime, and to reduce damage costs and outage duration.

District heating operators need to do more with less

One solution is digitization. District heating grids are increasingly getting online. More and more, the status of the grids can be determined from behind a computer screen. Also, anything from pressure and temperature to flow, leakage detection, and cathodic protection can be monitored remotely in pipes, stations, and substations. The developments in sensors, communication, and (mobile) applications provide increasingly flexible, affordable, and durable remote monitoring opportunities. In this way operational costs are reduced, heat losses are reduced, and the overall
lifetime of assets is extended.

Challenges and solutions

There are however three key challenges in digitizing asset monitoring:
• It is critical to know which data comes from which asset. This data
coupling process has a high failure rate and is always carried out in the field. Determining the right process and data model for connecting time series data to assets is therefore essential.
• Transitioning from manual inspections to remote monitoring will never occur all at once, and manual inspections will remain part of an asset monitoring process. This means that there is a need for a hybrid solution, i.e. one which integrates manual and automatic measurements and merges historic manual measurements with new automatic measurements.
• The benefits of remote monitoring can only happen when the subsequent processes adjust. Showing data in a graph is not sufficient. In fact, real-time data needs to translate into new workflows with clear roles and responsibilities.

Withthegrid has recognized these challenges and has developed an asset monitoring approach that integrates sensor data with manual measurements, geographic visualization, and workflow management.
Namely, this approach enables Withthegrid’s customers to reap the full benefits of remote monitoring from day one.

Implementation

Importantly, any digitization project should be as frictionless as possible. Therefore, during the implementation phase, Withthegrid offers additional support to enable a swift setup:
1. Import of historic data,
2. Linking with GIS systems,
3. Setting up APIs for data coupling.
