Aire and Withthegrid partner to bring legacy wind turbines into flexibility markets
Aire and Withthegrid partner to retrofit legacy wind turbines. Asset owners can now access flexibility markets and optimize energy production safely.
Aire,Aire is an innovative operator from Sweden that optimizes energy resources to maximize profitability and operational performance. Through AI-based forecasting and multi-market optimization, Aire coordinates wind power, solar, batteries, and industrial assets to ensure every kilowatt-hour is used where it creates the greatest value. More information: https://www.aire.energy/. a Swedish energy aggregator and optimizer of large energy assets, has partnered with WiththegridIf you don’t know us: Withthegrid’s mission is to deliver technology that enables a connected, secure, and resilient energy ecosystem. We do it via the Teleport Gateway, a local controller that securely connects renewable energy assets to the cloud, unlocking real-time remote control and local optimization for asset owners and traders. to unlock remote control of older wind assets.
By using the Teleport Gateway‘s existing integrations to retrofit legacy turbines, Aire enables asset owners to access ancillary markets that were previously unavailable to them.
The partnership launched with a handful of ≈ 1 MW power plants and with an exciting joint pipeline (combining wind turbines and BESS) to come online throughout 2026.
Bridging the gap for legacy wind assets
Sweden’s wind power represents nearly a quarter of the country’s energy production. However, many existing wind turbines were commissioned before the current demand for real-time grid balancing. These assets often lack the native connectivity required to receive dynamic control signals, effectively locking their owners out of valuable balancing markets like FCR and mFRR.
Acting as a secure, local controller, the Withthegrid’s Teleport connects directly to the wind turbine’s control system. It translates the specific turbine protocols into a standardized, secure API that Aire’s platform can access in real-time.
This setup allows Aire to send automated curtailment commands to the turbines, enabling them to align production with market demand, avoid negative prices, and provide grid stabilizing services.
Project snapshot: Retrofitting 1.7 MW of wind capacity
The partnership’s initial project retrofitted two 850 kW wind turbines at a single site. The site now provides active power control and real-time data forwarding, allowing Aire to optimize output while maintaining full operational safety through the Teleport’s local validation layer.
